This on-going collaborative project with the black Alumni of Panama Canal Zone high schools involves collecting, curating, coding and conserving born-digital audio and video recordings of black Panamanians. Their safe spaces and spatial experiences of security crossed international borders and institutional boundaries, as well as the concrete and steel instantiations of defense architecture and imperialist urbanism. Their verbal reflections on Cold War mobility, accessibility and connectivity may prove particularly useful for cultural historians, geographers and heritage managers as the diaspora of black Panamanians disperses across the isthmus and the world.
